How to prepare fresh homemade food for your dog

Your dog is part of your family, hence your interest in providing him with healthy food, but this does not mean that it is right to think that you can give your dog the same food that you eat because dogs have different nutritional needs than humans. You have to first understand what is the nature of healthy balanced food for the health of the dog, and after you understand this different nature, you must start preparing delicious food at home and serving it to your dog.

Understand the difference between a dog's diet in the wild and a dog that lives with you at home. Of course, wild dogs can live without a balanced diet, but their life expectancy is also shorter and they eat very different food than a domestic dog; While you might only feed your dog animal protein, dogs in the wild eat other organs of their prey such as kidneys, livers, brains, and other internal viscera, and this makes feeding them a little more complicated than just serving the meat and rice you buy from the grocer.

If your dog eats unbalanced home-cooked food, it can take years for him to show symptoms of a nutritional imbalance. This is because these symptoms are often caused by an absence or deficiency of small components such as vitamins and minerals rather than a lack of calories.

For example, a dog may be fine for weeks or even years, but at some point, he may suffer broken bones as a result of a lack of calcium in his diet for an extended period of time.

  • Get professional help creating a balanced diet. Unfortunately, you cannot choose the recipes that seem delicious to you and prepare them because each case is different from the other, so the nutritionist must create a nutrition program suitable for the nature of your dog.
  •  For example, a growing dog needs more than twice the amount of calories it needs for every kilogram of an adult dog’s body weight, while an older dog needs 20% fewer calories,
  • Basic diets — even those designed by veterinarians — usually lack some nutrients. There is a study of 200 food recipes created by veterinarians, and most of these recipes were missing an important nutrient.

Learn the proper way to prepare food. After you get a recipe made especially for your dog, learn how to properly cook food that preserves vitamins and minerals. Always try to make sure that you follow the instructions correctly; If the recipe says to prepare the chicken without the skin off, follow the instructions carefully and don't remove the skin, as this can upset the fat balance that he should eat. You should also weigh the ingredients carefully with a kitchen scale rather than using cups that may not be accurate.

To preserve the nutritional value, never boil vegetables, instead of steam them and serve them half raw to preserve their vitamins.

Don't improvise or substitute ingredients so you don't upset the balance of the meal.

Use calcium supplements to feed your dog. The dog needs a large amount of calcium. Even if you provide him with bones, there are still health risks he may suffer from; It is also possible for the bones to break and injure the dog's internal organs, causing inflammation, pain, and toxicity to the blood. Alternatively, you can add calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, or crushed eggshells; One teaspoon can contain 2,200 milligrams of calcium carbonate, and a 15-kg dog needs 1g per day, which is about half a teaspoon.

Bones may also become entangled in a dog's intestines and cause a blockage, which requires surgery and it is difficult to know if your dog is getting the calcium they need through the bones they are eating.

1

Include protein. An adult dog weighing 15 kg needs at least 25 g of net protein per day This can include eggs which contain a large number of amino acids needed by the dog, followed by animal proteins such as chicken, lamb, and turkey, high-quality plant sources Like legumes and grains, they can be very nutritious, so try to make sure your dog's diet contains at least 10% pure protein (meat).

Amino acids are the unit of protein formation, and there are 10 types of amino acids that a dog needs that he cannot form himself, and therefore must be provided to him in food.

2

Add fat. An adult dog weighing 15 kg needs 14 g of fat per day  You can be sure that the dog gets enough fat if you give him chicken without removing the skin or if you give him meat, and it is recommended that dog food contains 5% fat (to be weighed)

Fat contains fat-soluble vitamins, which are essential for good health, as they play a pivotal role in the formation of new cells and in the proper functioning of cells

3

within carbohydrates. Carbohydrates should be the main source of calories, and in particular, half of the food provided to the dog should be carbohydrates, an active dog weighing 14 kg needs 930 calories per day. Rice, wheat, barley, and oats in food.

Carbohydrates provide energy (fats and proteins also provide some of the energy), and carbohydrates add fiber to your dog's diet, which is essential for healthy digestive functions.

4

Include metal. Dogs need calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, iron, copper, selenium, and other minerals, and a lack of minerals in the dog's diet leads to many problems, including weak bones, easy susceptibility to fracture, anemia, and poor nervous communication that may lead to nervous attacks. Different foods contain different percentages of minerals.
